My sister-in-law Ana had her second baby this past week. Now she is the amazingly happy and well adjusted mom of 2 boys...only 13 months apart. I would be a nervous wreck, but she has bounced back wonderfully.
Congrats to the proud parents, Phillip & Ana. Here is to a new family of 4 and a long break until the next one. (wink-wink)
Above is a pic of cute baby Jackson, and yes I think he smiled for me. ;)
Now that Thanksgiving is over I feel I can really delve into the endless realms of Christmas decorating. There are so many wonderful ways to decorate and rarely is there a wrong way to do this.
My mother's mother was 1st generation Croatian and spoke Croatian and Italian fluently. Her idea of Christmas came from what she knew in Croatia. My Father's Father was 2nd generation Swedish so growing up my mom always decorated with a lot of wheat and red and green colors.
There are so many different ways to decorate. From retro to vintage, Victorian to country, contemporary to traditional. I love all of these styles and only wish I could change up my house each year with a new design idea. But that would take a lot more time and money than I have at the present. ;)
Here are just a few rooms decorated for Christmas that I just love. For more Christmas decorating ideas go to Ideal Homeand there are a bunch, you'll be sure to find the one that fits your own unique style.
I love this idea of the jars, so simple and pretty.
ok ok, I know Wal-mart isn't the classiest place in the world to buy your clothing...but common. Really, Wal-mart...are you really selling these sweaters in your stores? What year is it, 1986?
Yes, the 4 sweaters you see above are currently being sold at Wal-mart. At first I thought it was a joke, heck, maybe it is. But word to the wise, if you have a sweater that resembles any of the above and you did not buy it for the sole purpose of wearing it to an 80's themed "tacky Christmas sweater party", BURN IT!
If you have one and think that you could possibly make it look decent, go ahead...I dare ya.
Otherwise, do yourself and all those around you a favor and spend $5-$7 more, go to Old Navy and get one of the sweaters below. Understated, yet with some embellishment.
psone of my many Liz Lemon moments...I got an invitation to a Christmas party 2 year ago, I can't remember what the invite said but I got the impression we were supposed to dress silly. So I went to the DI and found my husband and I 1980's Christmas sweaters. I'll never forget when the hostess opened the door, she was as cute and hip as a person could look. Fashionably dressed from head to toe. Then I noticed my other 3 friends were dressed the same, pretty and fashionable. We were the ONLY people out of about 50 that had on tacky Christmas sweaters, turtlenecks and pegged jeans. I think I even blew the sides of my hair out to look more tacky.
I remember I didn't even feel dumb, I just felt like "yep, this is my life. whatever" and mentally did the robot dance back out the door.
UPDATE: ok, so this last weekend (Dec. 3rd) we attended our ward Christmas party. I was talking to a beautiful and very put together older lady from our ward who had on a darling vest and matching turtleneck like the ones above and I thought she looked fabulous! So I guess I take back what I said and my personal opinion is if you were born before 1950 than go ahead! ;)
Before: (above pic) Since we moved in I have wanted to paint our front door. The white door was fine and so was the screen front door, but let's face it, the screen drastically stifled my ability to change the look of the front of the house through paint color and hid my festive seasonal wreaths. Oh, and we never used it.
Phase 2: (above) For inspiration I drove around the neighborhood looking for the color door I liked. Our neighborhood is very diverse. Within a few blocks radius there are houses ranging from $175k to $700K. I found a gorgeous huge brick colonial home with black shutters, deep red brick and white trim like ours. They had a gorgeous green door and it looked amazing, so that is when I decided to paint our door green. I went to home depot and decided on a Martha Stewart Sea Grass Green color.
Well after painting it (above), putting my wreath up and looking at it for a few weeks as I'd drive by I decided I didn't like my door color at all. It was too limey green and not a rich green. So I took the can of paint I had left over and mixed in a little blue, grey and off white from other paint I had around. I got the color in the pictures below. It looks much better and not so light.
All these projects will have to wait until after Christmas, but for now I am pleased what we've done so far! And really that's all that matters when you do a project, you liking it.
It snowed for the first time tonight. At 10am this morning Madeline started throwing up and hasn't stopped. Max started his bought with puking tonight at around 6pm. Steve is feeling sick, but so far Henry and I are a-ok. fingers crossed. It has been a long day to say the least. I am washing my 5th blanket and 3rd pillow...so when I walked outside I took in the beauty of first snow. It was wonderful to see snow on our grass, yes we have grass and I am still grateful for it. The seasons are so vibrant here. As beautiful as the snow is, it marks the beginning of the sickies. But it also marks the beginning of hot coco with the kids, sledding at Happy Hallow, cookies, Christmas etc. So welcome Winter and snow, my old frien-emies.
I started my silhouette's of the kids tonight, I am hoping to get Christmas done by the beginning of December. I took profile pics of the kids and had each photo enlarged at Costco to 8x10 prints ($4.30). I bought a craft razor knife ($2.75) and scissors and cut out the children's profile. I also bought black fabric paint($2) and a stencil sponge brush ($1). I stenciled the silhouette image onto a very thick cream colored fabric I bought at wal-mart. I bought 1 yard for $5. 1 yard was enough to make 6 pillow fronts (I am using an alternate fabric for the back of the pillow). Above are the silhouettes of Mimi and Henry. Max's weren't done yet. Now they are downstairs drying. I'll be sure to post more pictures as I get more stages completed.
Ok, enough TMI, gotta do it every 6 months or so. ;) Back to more important things like crafting.. ;)
I made this banner for my sis and old friend, Wendy from DC about a month ago. Wendy's shower was held in DC, my sis flew out to attend and brought this flag banner with her. Rozzie (as I call her) ;) took pictures of the shin-dig below.
This party looked so fun, great job Liz and Roz!!
I posted the picture of the party favors above because I think they are adorable, I am going to have to ask Liz where she got them.
Wish I could have been there too. I love DC and loved my time there as an intern in 2000 (wow, 11 years ago!) Below are some pics I found of my time in DC with my wonderful roommate Emily and all the wonderful girlfriends I made (who sadly, I've lost contact with).
above: Emily and I at the Pentagon City Costco. I am holding bag from Sephora my favorite make-up store and the store I bought my first make-up from in my make-up intervention with my mom and sis while we lived in Paris when I was 19.
Some of the interns and I at a hotel we stayed in in Wilmington, NC. We all rented a big van and drove from DC to Wilmington (about 6 hours). It was a blast! I tried to get rid of our red eyes, but it just made us look weird. I am in the front on the far right with the white v-neck and weird black eyes. ;)
No, it's not Oprah. It is LIZ LEMON. I've have been watching seasons 1-3 on Netflix of 30 Rock and decided that if I had one wish it would be to spend a day with Tina Fey.
I told Steve last night that I feel just like her in many ways.
EXAMPLE 1: I often say or write something that I think is pretty clever, witty or funny only to get the courtesy smile or a polite look of "I don't get it" from other people. My favorite is when I write something either through email, fb or blogs that I think is goofy and kinda funny only to get silence and NO response whatsoever. Or my favorite, a one sentence "all business" response avoiding altogether the paragraph I wrote.
EXAMPLE 2: I was every one's "buddy" in High School. I was pretty goofy and care free and loved to just be with people, but never once (NO not even ONCE) was I any one's girlfriend in High School. I didn't wear make-up until I was 19 years old, had really big thick eyebrows until I was 19 when my younger 16 year old sister sat me down and taught me how to pluck them. I also held on to my tummy/baby fat until I was about 22. I always had really skinny legs but my tummy was, well, plump.
Example 3: Tina Fey was a virgin until she was 24, well I was VL (virgin lips) until I was 24...that was after my baby fat melted off, I wore make-up, plucked my eyebrows and learned to embrace my womanly figure (and not hide it under men's large Gap shirts like I did in H.S.)
Example 4: My BFFs were always really pretty girls and always attracted lots of attention from boys, to which I ended up being the boy's "buddy", you know the friend with the "fun personality". And I was very content with that, I didn't even have a desire to date a boy or have a boyfriend until I was 24 (guess that's why I decided to kiss one at that time).
Example 5: I am not refined, I say what I think, I embrace my quirks (yet at the same time try to hide them or at least suppress them when I am in situations where I think I should act like an adult). I think life is weird, I think it's funny when people try too hard to be perfect or proper or act like they've never farted or burped or just been well, human.
As Christmas draws near I am brain storming Christmas gifts for the grands. I have decided to combine my last post of "painting pillows" with diy children silhouettes.
I love wrapping gifts at Christmas time. I can be pretty OCD about it. My wrapping paper has to coordinate with my tree and match other wrapped gifts. If I get gifts from people that have random colored wrapping paper on it (even if it is cute) but doesn't match, the gifts go to the back of the tree.I am fully aware that this is odd behavior, but I love the look of a beautiful Christmas tree with beautifully wrapped presents underneath. I wonder what catalog living would say about that. ;) The good thing is I can totally make fun of myself for doing this.
I love Martha Stewart's creative and 'clean' ideas for wrapping gifts. Here are just a few....
The B.B. stands for Brooke Bartholomew (a mouthful, I know). "Bibelot" was a tribute to the years I lived in France. Over a decade ago I began this blog because I was going to boutique shows and selling my homemade baby blankets, burp cloths and Mommy & Me crystal bracelets. After a few years of trying the boutique'ing scene I closed shop, but kept the blog. It was fun to have a place to share all of my random projects. Liz Stanley (Say Yes) and Susan Petersen (Freshly Picked) are the two gals who introduced me to the joys of blogging over a decade ago in the Avenues, SLC. It was fun to be a part of the entire process, their skill and creativity left me in awe and inspired this blog. Currently, this blog is a mod-podge of craft projects, home improvement projects, random opinions and soap box moments. This blog seems to change along with the various changes of our family life, but there will always be a craft or home improvement project sprinkled in here somewhere because I love a good project.
